Two nonprofits—the media arts organization Third World Newsreel (www.twn.org) and the "community-building" Hip-Hop Association (www.hiphopassociation.org) have launched H2ONewsreel, a new film distribution label offering "a global view of the hip-hop cultural movement." The catalog currently consists of eight documentaries—including Mark Benjamin and Danny Hoch's Jails, Hospitals, and Hip Hop and J.T. Takagi's She Rhymes Like a Girl—from South Africa, Senegal, Morocco, Colombia, Cuba, and the United States, most with separately sold soundtrack CDs. More info at www.h20newsreel.com.
In August, E1 Entertainment became the sole U.S. distributor of DVD/Blu-ray titles for both PorchLight Entertainment (see News Briefs, LJ 9/1/09), whose home entertainment division closed in April, and The Disinformation Company (www.disinfo.com), whose titles had previously been distributed through Ryko. To browse the film companies' combined 100 available titles, which include 64 Zoo Lane (from PorchLight) and Origins of the Da Vinci Code (from Disinformation), visit www.kochdistribution.com.
In August, Warner Brothers and Turner Broadcasting signed with YouTube to distribute their movie and TV content in short form through the popular video streaming site, which also streams content from ABC, CBS, and Sony Pictures. The development comes on the heels of Walt Disney Company's partnership in April with YouTube competitor Hulu (Video NewsBriefs, LJ 6/15/09). More info at www.variety.com.
In July, international digital music distributor The Orchard expanded its reach into the film and video marketplace through partnerships with the independent film companies IndiePix Films (www.indiepixfilms.com), National Lampoon (nationallampoon.com/movies), and Independent Film Sales (www.independentfilmcompany.com). The Orchard, whose retail network spans some 600 digital storefronts and mobile carriers in 59 countries, also has video distribution deals with iTunes, YouTube, and Hulu.
