Barclay, Donald A. & Eric D. Scott. The Library Renovation, Maintenance, and Construction Handbook. Neal-Schuman. 2011. 200p. illus. bibliog. index. ISBN 9781555707170. pap. $125 with CD-ROM. PRO MEDIA

Library administrators and trustees who are considering any sort of construction project but feel insufficiently informed should read this book before taking the first step. Two veteran university librarians with construction experience take readers step-by-step through the various construction scenarios. There are three parts: basics of construction and renovation, library-specific construction and renovation projects, and maintaining an existing library building. Readers will learn about the stages of a project from basics to detailed plans, many of which are included here. The particular spaces within a library, along with all important furnishings and signage, are covered. Renovations require special attention, particularly in relation to security and safety, and the authors explain what to expect. They briefly cover green libraries, which will alert readers to seek more information on the topic. An enclosed CD-ROM includes plans, blueprints and blueprint symbols, photos of interior and exterior construction in progress with captions, a glossary of construction and maintenance terms, website links for code authorities, and more. A most helpful tool. VERDICT Highly recommended as a go-to book for administrators and trustees in any type of library as they begin any sort of construction. Even better when used in conjunction with William W. Sannwald’s Checklist of Library Building Design Considerations (5th ed.).—Marie Bruni, Huntington Memorial Lib., Oneonta, NY
