Titles that hit big with our audio reviewers

By Raya Kuzyk -- Library Journal, 01/15/2010

The past year's best audiobooks, all recipients of starred LJ reviews, are more varied than ever—they include a posthumously published novel (The Girl Who Played with Fire), two debut works of hard-boiled fiction (The Manual of Detection and Bad Things Happen), a meditation on the wonders of nature (Summer World), and a joint first-person account of injustice and redemption (Picking Cotton). To capture better the breadth of exceptional audio titles released in 2009, we've expanded the number of LJ Best Audiobooks to 40, as well as added an Honorable Mentions listing (p. 54). Thanks to our distinguished roster of audio reviewers for their nominations. (See also “LJ's Top DVDs of 2009,” p. 67.)

Language-Learning Standouts

The year's major developments in language instruction (see also “Speak Easy,” LJ 7/09, p. 22)

Auralog redesigned the library edition of its TELL ME MORE Language Database to include tutorials for patrons and librarians; new licensing and pricing structures were also implemented. The library edition, available online and in CD-ROM format in nine different languages, features speech-recognition technology, 3-D phonetic animations, Spoken Error Tracking, and more.

Mango Languages added a new product to its online language-learning system: Mango Basic, which offers enhanced exercises, multiple audio options (e.g., audio can be heard at conversational or articulate speeds), a new interface, and more. A Mango subscription now includes 36 guided lessons, including 22 foreign languages and 14 ESL courses.

Simon & Schuster's Pimsleur and Innovative Language Learning both released new iPod/iPhone-friendly language-learning apps available exclusively through iTunes.

Recorded Books partnered with Transparent Language to offer Byki (short for “Before You Know It”), an online language-learning system that patrons can access from inside or outside the library, via the web browser on a Windows or Mac computer. Lessons are available in 83 languages, with more to come. (See Audio NewsBriefs, LJ 10/1/09.)

Sylvan Dell introduced its next-generation multilingual ebook, which newly includes an auto-read feature (in English or Spanish, with more languages to come). There are currently 45 multilingual ebooks in the catalog; 11 additional titles will follow this year. The target audience is children attempting to learn a foreign language or ESOL families wanting to learn English. (See Audio NewsBriefs, LJ 9/15/09.)

Macmillan Audio launched a new “Behind the Wheel Express” series with a trio of three-hour titles—covering Spanish, French, and Italian—on CD. The line offers a more abbreviated approach to language learning than does Macmillan's original “Behind the Wheel” series, whose eight-hour titles cover ten languages and are available on CD or as digital downloads. (See Audio NewsBriefs, LJ 12/09.)

Nine Collins Easy Learning language guides (Collins UK) became available in the United States through Trafalgar Square Publishing from IPG. The guides—covering languages including German, Mandarin, and Portuguese—each consist of three CDs as well as a 48-page booklet that includes lesson transcripts. The courses can also be downloaded onto MP3 players.
