Eye of the Beholder
Follow the stars for top art books titles and best bargains. Jun 11, 2010
Art, like beauty, as the adage goes, is in the eye of the beholder. Art also is a living, breathing thing that evolves over time, so whawt is considered "art" is ever changing-how many of the great artists whose works today sell for fortunes were failures during their lifetime? The 20th century unknowingly gave birth to new variations of art that appeared in press photos, comic books, and the covers of pulp magazines and novels. Although the images included in these disposable publications sold for pennies, they have accrued great worth both in terms of monetary value and recognition for their creators. While this fall season brings heaps of glorious new volumes highlighting traditional fine and modern art, there is also a plethora of pop art titles gleaned from comics, movies, and music. It might seem unusual for Michelangelo and Monet to share space with Captain Marvel, Hollywood stars, Doonesbury, Darth Vader, and Metallica, but art comes in all shapes and sizes. It's also been said that those who can't paint take pictures instead, so photography, from film to digital, also gets extensive coverage. The 81 titles here include something for all tastes?and budgets, with prices ranging from $125 on the high end down to $19.95. Starred titles (.) are essential for most library collections. Browse and enjoy!
