LJ's Rebecca T. Miller Named SLJ's New Editor-in-Chief

School Library Journal has a new editor-in-chief. Rebecca T. Miller, executive editor of features for Library Journal, will assume the position effective December 15, 2011.

"We're very pleased to have Rebecca as our new editor-in-chief at SLJ," says Ian Singer, VP and group publisher of Media Source, parent company of SLJ and LJ. "With the knowledge, experience, and creativity she'll bring to the position, I'm confident SLJ is in the right hands. Her leadership will be welcomed as SLJ continues to evolve and grow into a true multimedia information resource. "

With a background in journalism that began at the Utne Reader, Miller joined LJ in 1998 as a book review editor and quickly rose, becoming senior editor of features in 2002 and executive editor of features and the web in 2005. She earned her MLIS from New York's Pratt Institute in 2009.

Among her accomplishments while at LJ, Miller launched America's Star Libraries: The LJ Index of Public Library Service and the Best Small Library in America Award. Most recently, she created the New Landmark Libraries, which this year highlights the most inspiring and innovative public library buildings in the nation; an academic edition is in the works for 2012.

"I'm thrilled with the opportunity to work with the great staff at SLJ," says Miller, who pursued her MLS degree in the evenings while working at LJ. "They've had some wonderful successes, and I know we'll have an exciting future together."

Miller replaces long-time SLJ editor-in-chief Brian Kenney, who left in October to become director of the White Plains Public Library in White Plains, NY.

The mother of two young children, Miller says she's personally and professionally looking forward to focusing on library services to kids and young adults.

"Library services to children provide the backbone for their success in school and in life," Miller says. "I'm very excited to help build capacity in schools and public libraries, provide and support advocacy, discover great authors and books, foster innovation in services, and keep readers up to date on the potential and pitfalls of our rapidly changing technology landscape. I look forward to fostering an even more robust community for those doing their great work within these libraries."
