Mid-Continent Public Library (MCPL), Kansas City, MO, in partnership with the Frich Corporation, is developing yet another option for automated materials distribution (see InfoTech, LJ 6/1/09, p. 18, for previous stories). The system, called Library-To-Go, has been installed at two sites and uses technology adapted from Frich's Lock-a-Shelf theft-prevention product for CDs and DVDs.

Unlike other systems from Evanced Solutions and Libramation, this one does not rely on RFID tags on materials. Instead, Library-To-Go unlocks only the designated item and case for a patron based on the holds associated with the card scanned at a self-check machine. Another variation features P.O. Box–sized lockers to store materials.

The automated system was designed to cope with a service population expected to grow 33 percent between 2000 and 2030. “Our library system has to provide a third more service without building a third more libraries,” said Jim Staley, marketing and communications manager for MCPL, citing the economic constraints the library faces in the foreseeable future. Staley also added that the system allows the library to provide some services otherwise unavailable in more remote parts of the district.

To return items, patrons use a secure book drop for returns; pickups and deliveries are made to the sites daily.
