Note: This position is part of the KRL Librarian Bargaining Unit.

Hours: 20 hours per week (.5 FTE, FLSA exempt).

Salary: Compensation range is $1,877.46 to $2,519.33 per month depending on experience.

POSITION PURPOSE: Performs a variety of professional library services including reference assistance, selection, maintenance of young people's library materials and promotion of young people's library services to the community through education and outreach. Utilizes a broad scope of knowledge specific to materials, authors, and resources in a variety of subject areas--including information technology. This position reports to the Kingston Branch Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

. Master of Library Science Degree from an American Library Association accredited school of Librarianship and/or Washington State certification as a Librarian.

. Minimum of three years of professional library experience.

. Experience providing Youth Services required.

. Must have or be able to obtain a Washington State Driver's License.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

. Knowledge of program management; ability to plan, organize, direct, and administer a major library service program or collection.

. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, patrons, user groups, community organizations, volunteer groups and staff and to serve the public (e.g., adults, teens, children) courteously and effectively in a public service environment, and to work effectively with library staff.

. Ability to work under pressure, and to effectively address a variety of complex issues and situations.

. Ability to recognize and set priorities, and to plan, organize, and coordinate the work of others.

. Ability to operate personal computers and: use modern word processing, database, and spreadsheet

software, as well as, on-line catalogs; access and utilize the Internet and other computerized library tools

effectively. Have a working knowledge of basic print reference sources. Ability to perform required data

entry on a computer terminal or personal computer in an accurate and timely manner.

. Ability to conduct Internet searches, evaluate quality of Internet resources, and instruct patrons in the

use of Internet resources.

. Ability to use electronic and multi-media resources to create displays, write articles and publicize library

programs and resources.

. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

. Knowledge of community resources, events, organizations, and local history.

. Ability to work a varied schedule including evenings and weekends.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

Requires standing, walking, sitting, talking, listening, handling, grasping, bending, reaching, stooping and

repetitive motions of hands/wrists. Occasionally requires climbing, crouching, twisting and kneeling. Must

be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds regularly. Work is mainly performed indoors under office-type

conditions. Certain librarian positions may be required to operate an automobile.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Answer library information inquiries by phone, on-line, or in person ranging from quick fact-finding, to

in-depth searches of library resources, including on-line searches.

2. Provide information and promote the library's collection and program services to patrons, staff and the

community at large.

3. Provide readers' advisory and reference services for children, young adults, and adults. Participate in

outreach activities with the community; prepare bibliographies and display materials to generate

increased patron usage.

4. Promote, prepare and present library services and programs, book talks, tours, story times and other

programs for various age groups--within the library, the community and schools.

5. Plan, schedule, and arrange publicity.

6. Participate in outreach activities, including liaisons with and presentations to organizations, agencies,

daycares, and schools in the community in order to promote and demonstrate library materials and

services, and to generate program funding. May participate in preparing presentations for community

access television or other media alternatives.

7. Instruct patrons and staff in the use of on-line catalogs, databases, reference web resources, and other

appropriate reference resources.

8. Participate in the selection of library materials for purchase by reading reviews from professional

publications and other sources based on knowledge of the community and/or target audience

interests, professional judgment, and the existing collection.

9. Review and evaluate collection for weeds, mends, discards or allocation to book sales; order

replacements as necessary.

10. Perform other related duties, as assigned.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

1. May present topics of special interest at conferences or through electronic media.

2. May author articles for publication in newsletters or other print media; may write or assist in writing

grant applications or other funding requests.

3. May oversee collection activities specific to a subject specialty collection, such as Business Reference.

4. May have site responsibility, as assigned, in the absence of a Branch Manager.

. Ability to adapt to rapidly changing information, technology, work procedures and library services.

. Ability to maintain confidentiality in dealing with customer and/or employee records.

Current Schedule: Will include evening and weekend hours that are flexible to meet programming needs. Exact schedule to be determined. Please note that scheduled work hours are subject to change at any time to meet the needs of the library.

Salary: Compensation range is $1,877.46 to $2,519.33 per month depending on experience.
