Library Leaders Creating the 2.0 Library of the Future
Library Journals Movers and Shakers 2009
Movers & Shakers, which LJ launched in 2002 to identify librarians, vendors, and others who are "shaping the future of libraries," is now over 400 innovators strong, with the addition of the 51 members of the Class of 2009. Together, these individuals comprise the coming generation of library leadership. They've embraced library technology, particularly library 2.0, "to provide exceptional service and kick-ass collections that respond to the real interest of patrons," as one of this year's Movers so aptly phrased it.
Overachievers all, they represent a Who's Who of creativity and library trends in the field. But, as we've discovered in the past eight years, there's no end to the number of library leaders we could include. We've already started compiling our own personal lists for next year. Be sure to get your nominations in early for 2010.

Community Builders
Their efforts create communities--real, digital, green--that enrich the library and learning for students and faculty, teens, children, and adults.
Trendspotters
These librarians adapt and translate 2.0 software--Twitter, Flickr, wikis, IM--for masses of library users and for their own colleagues, building out library 2.0.
Activists
They fight to serve the underserved, for open access to information, and for library--and librarian--funding to keep it all going.
Tech Evangelists
Library technology is only a means for these public librarians and academic librarians to provide service: Amazon-like book systems, lifelong learning online, digital art, and much more.
Marketers
A rock'n'roll tour and an RV library tour, 20 gallons of chicken soup, 8000 booktalks, 57,000 fines for kids forgiven--these public librarians, a school media specialist, and three Dutch librarians will do anything to get your attention.
Innovators
Smartphones for library users, 24-hour turnaround to get a book, a library stay-out-of-jail card, a one book, one zip code program: their innovations take many forms, from library 2.0 to the library "book" brand.
Advocates
Their passion inspires creative services like Reading for Life, Web 2.0 for Nurse Educators, a teen Environmental Film Festival, and so much more.
